Old Belvedere claim J6 Cup

The J6 team had another successful year and managed to retain the Cup after crushing Wanderers in the final by 29-0.

This team was made up of a number of U21s and a few older heads (who only tog out after Christmas, when the evenings are brighter and a little warmer).

The first cup match was against Old Wesley who proved to be difficult opposition for the first five minutes but after a few jinks from me inspired everyone, everything clicked into place.  There was the class of Rocky, the pace of Evan Lett and the fitness of Sharkey.  All producing an array of tries which ensured a comfortable victory for “The Lodge”.

Next up was Blackrock in the semi final, and after our pack lifted their work rate and actually supplied clean ball to the vastly talented backline: the centre pairing of the two Davids created a number of opportunities and the tries started to flow from the likes of Enda, Locky,  Keogh and Cathal “The Rooster” Turley.  We had established such a lead that the management thought it would be an opportune moment to restart the heart of the Club’s dinosaur: Damien Torsney (yes Damien).  We put some boots on him and sent him out whilst making sure that the St John’s ambulance were still in attendance (with the insurance risk assessor pitchside).  Needless to say his first contribution was to set up a fantastic try after just 90 seconds, which unfortunately  was not converted as Richie ‘Twinkle Toes’ Ball missed from in front of the posts.

This team only likes to play three matches a year, and one of them has to be in Donnybrook, so off we went to play to Wanderers in the final who had a very young and fit team.   However, their heads seemed to a little when they saw my expert place kicking during the warm up and knew they could afford no infringements within 60 metres of the goal posts.  After a very close first half we settled into our rhythm and started to dominate territory, once in their territory we managed to convert a couple of opportunities with tries from Evan Lett, Dan Kane,  Steven Malone. In the last  quarter due to a serious injury to our back row, Dan Kane, Damien Torsney once again came on to steady the ship.  This immediately resulted in a forward’s try by Cathal Turley.  Yet again, Richie ‘Twinkle Toes’ failed to convert the simple kick!   However, it was another great victory to finish off another long season on a high.

Thanks to all the players for their efforts throughout the season and a big thanks to Steve O’ Leary and Damien Torsney for all their organisation and hard work.
