November: Support our Sponsors

Funds are tight everywhere at the moment, so we are lucky to have the support of Crean Salley Architects and The Sports Surgery Clinic.  Now our Senior XV forwards coach, Matt Kennedy has kindly provided a banner ad for his Envirofriendly Heating Company, so please take moment to click on their respective banner ads and direct some business their way if you can.

And more good news: Noel Shannon’s firm PROSTRATEGY has taken the final regular ad slot which is great for the club so please do take a moment to click on the ad and visit their webpages.

Better still, if you have a business need in any of the areas our sponsors work in, at a minimum, do contact them and let them pitch for any business you have.

Also, if you are an O2 customer, please text “Old Belvedere” to 50308 and 5% of your bill will go to the club - with no strings attached. Better still, if your entire company is with O2, you can sign up a batch of those phones too. Email admin@oldbelvedere.ie for more details.

Belvo J4’s defeat Greystones

Greystones 10 Old Belvedere J4’s 33

“A great win on Satruday for the J4’s.  Tries were scored by Eoin Kiely, Tim Healy, CIaran Lynch and our star fly-half David MacGahan.  David almost added a second but was held up just short.  Sadly, David broke his leg late in the game.  The squad and mangement wish him a speedy recovery.

UCD are up next as we aim to make it three from three. My thanks to all for a hugely spirited performance.  Special mention to Tommy Hynes, who rolled back the years in his first full game for over two seasons; Tim Mullen, who battled through injury; and Niall O’Driscoll on playing so well after being called up at the last moment.”

Steve O’Leary, Manager J4’s

Belvo make it a hat-trick of wins in the AIL

Old Belvedere maintained their 100% record in the 2008-2009 AIL with a closely fought 16-11 win over Dolphin at Anglesea Road.

Two second-half tries from winger Eddie Devitt and scrum-half Ruarui Cushion were just enough to see the home side through.  Fly-half Kieran Hurrell contributed two penalties to Belvo’s tally.

Dolphin fought hard until the end and scored a penalty in injury-time to take a deserved bonus point.

Belvo now sit in joint second place in the AIL with Clontarf.  Blackrock, with an extra bonus point to their credit, top the table.

Match report from Ladies’ league win over Malahide

Money in the Bank…

The first game of the season for Belvo ladies was played on Sunday the 5th of October, which after a wet and windy week, turned out to be a perfect day for rugby as the sun decided to come along. The girls were facing Malahide and Belvo was expecting an eager team who had the added advantage of playing in front of their home crowd. The game started well when Belvo opened the scoring in the first 15 mins as winger Anne Marie Flaherty (Ammo) flew over the try line - the end result of beautiful Belvo phase play.

A few hasty decisions and bad calls from the players allowed Malahide to score two penalties.  However, Belvo’s quick and measured response led to another try for Belvo when fullback Roisin O’Donnell broke through the Malahide ranks to score an inspiring try. The Belvo ladies continued to work well rucking and put immense pressure on Malahide, who struggled to produce any back moves.

Following several incidents, Malahide’s front row had to no choice but to concede that Belvo had the more powerful pack and it was agreed that scrums would change to non-contested. This unfortunately led to a momentary lack of concentration and allowed Malahide to score their only try of the game as the team was caught offguard… for the first and last time in this highly spirited affair.

Belvo continued to push home their advantage which led to another two tries, first winger Aisling O’Callaghan on her rugby debut running in support of centre Ailis Egan was perfectly positioned for the off load and went over the line. A few minutes later Ailis decided to take it in herself as she glided over the line for the final score of the match.

Overall it was a wonderful opening match for Belvo, and very much a team game with a wonderful display from the talented backs and a lot of hard graft from the forwards.  Every Belvo player contributed in one way or another. A win and a bonus point is definitely the perfect way to start the campaign!
