AIB CUP: Old Belvedere 25-22 Ballymena (AET)
Belvo made it through to the next round of the AIB Cup (where they will face UCC away) by winning against Ballymena in extra-time. The report below is from RTE:
“Scrum half Ruairi Cushion was the hero for Old Belvedere as he landed an extra-time penalty to end Ballymena’s resistance at Anglesea Road.
In an epic battle, Belvedere prevailed after two periods of extra-time, during which Cushion, the hosts’ third place-kicker of the afternoon, managed to split the posts.
The Dublin 4 outfit led 12-0 early on thanks to tries from Marcus McAllister and David Mongan, with Eamonn Fitzgerald kicking one conversion.
But Ballymena bounced back to end the first half 15-12 ahead - Peter Budina and captain Ian Caldwell both touched down and Kiwi Tommy Woods kicked the other five points.
An intercept try from Woods’ opposite number, Kieran Hurrell, saw Belvedere shoot back into the lead after the restart.
The drama continued as a try from Sam McKinney, the son of former Ireland and Lions player Stuart McKinney, had Ballymena leading 22-17.
Leo Auva’a then sprung into space to score Belvedere’s fourth try, and with the conversion missed, the game went to extra-time.”
Under 20’s: Old Belvedere 20 Trinity 21
The under 20’s lost 21 -20 in a very competitive league fixture against a Trinity side packed with scholarship representative players.
Both sides scored 2 tries a piece and Belvo had a penalty to win it in the closing moments which drifted the wrong side of the post. A great effort by the lads with many stand out performances and they can take great pride from their performance.
J1’s: Blackrock 0 Old Belvedere 21
“A young mobile Blackrock side were well beaten by a very tactically proficient Old Belvedere team. With a lot of new faces in this team, the structure and game plan was implemented faultlessly, and from the sidelines you could not tell that quite a number of these guys had not played together before. After three out of three successful kicks by Brian Collins, most of the first half was played in Blackrock’s half and Old Belvedere went into the interval 9 - 0 up. The second half was much the same, with Blackrock unable to penetrate the Old Belvedere defence.
Tackling from one to 15 was immense and Old Belvedere’s counter rucking was superb, winning at least 10 turnovers in the second half. Brain Collins cleverly keeping the game focused in Blackrock’s half ultimately led to the games first try by Fergal McGee. Shortly after, again created by Tommy Toomey, old boy Tim Jago fell over the line for the games second and last try. It was a great team performance that will hopefully continue through to this week’s league game against Suttonians.”

J2’s: Wanderers 14 Old Belvedere 20
A great win for Belvo with tries from Johnny O’Neill, Luke Hananoe and Matt Drum and one penalty and conversion by Eoghan O’Malley
J3’s: Walkover. Skerries unable to field side.
J4’s: UCD 3 Belvo 29
“Saturday saw the J4s continue their unbeaten run to make it 3 wins out of 3 with a mixed performance.
It took us until half-time to get going and we were lucky to go in at 8-3 up at the interval - UCD missing what should have been a certain try minutes before the half time whistle.
Strong words were said at half time and we began to take control of the game in the second half with improved tackling and a much better pack display, tries from the irrepressible Tom (I thought I was coaching the team not playing every week) Hynes, Des (soon to be dad) Mc Hugh and Tim(no-ones going to stop me now) Healy.
Sean ( recently engaged) Murray added a couple of conversions and penalties to top off a much improved performance. Next week AIB away in DCU. Well done to all.”
