Old Belvedere win O’Connor Cup

Congratulations to the Old Belvedere J5’s who claimed the O’Connell Cup last night in Donnybrook.

Captain Dave Keogh and manager Damien Torsney gave outgoing President Steve Tormey a perfect send off with a stunning 29-3 win over Terenure.

The night was made even better as the trophy was presented to Dave Keogh by Belvedere’s very own Dorothy Collins.  Dorothy was performing one of her very last acts as Honorary Secretary of the Leinster Branch.  Dorothy has been a wonderful servant of both Leinster and Old Belvedere and certainly deserves a break from all the rugby work!

Well done to all concerned.

Club Awards Night

Please make a date in your diary for our end of season ‘Awards Night’ on Friday, 8th May at Anglesea Road.

This is going to be an ‘Awards Night’ a night to remember as well as a great way for the club to recognise the players, supporters and volunteers which help to make our club such a wonderful place.

The awards night will be in the club ballroom and we will be having a sit down meal before the award ceremony and will finish the evening with live music.

This will also be the last social function for our outgoing President Steve Tormey, so please turn up to help make it a memorable night for him as it is well deserved after a great year’s presidency.

We are limited to 25 tables (ten per table) at 30 euros a head.  We expect the evening to sell out so please get in early with your booking.

To make you reservation, either email the office at admin@oldbelvedere.ie  or call Damien Torsney on 087 2597087 to book your place.

We look forward to hearing from you and for what should be a great night.

Old Belvedere legend passes away

Old Belvedere is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Karl Mullen.

Karl was one of the greatest players ever to have represented not only Old Belvedere, but also Ireland and the British and Irish Lions.

Karl captained Old Belvedere in the 1949-1950 season and not only played for the club for many years (winning several honours) but also went on to manage Belvo and also to serve as President.

Karl won 25 caps for Ireland and was famous for being the first (and until this year the only) man to lead Ireland to a Grand Slam back in 1948.

In 1950 Karl led the Lions in Australia and New Zealand - the highest honour a Northern Hemisphere player can achieve.

Karl was a wonderful ambassador for both Old Belvedere and the game of rugby. His passing will be mourned throughout the rugby playing world.

Michael Campbell Memorial Match

Message from Steve Tormey, President of Old Belvedere:

This Saturday, April 25th, there is a very special game taking place in Malahide RFC.

Malahide Vets and Old Belvedere Vets are playing in a Memorial Match for Michael Campbell.

This game will obviously be an occasion close to the hearts of everyone in our club and I would ask as many members as possible to turn up on the day and support the event.

The Michael Campbell Memorial trophy will be presented to the winning team by Michael’s wife, Ciara, and her daughters. Michael spent many happy years in both Belvo and Malahide and I’m sure it will be an occasion to savour.

The match is to be played at Malahide RFC, Saturday, April 25th at 3pm.

As President I feel honoured to be the club figurehead for this day and I implore everyone at Belvo to turn up and make the match a great success.”

Old Belvedere mounted a late comeback against Cork Con in the AIL on Saturday only to lose to a penalty deep in injury time.

Belvo rallied from 13-0 down at halftime to take a 20-19 lead with just minutes remaining after a late try from Marcus McAllister.  Sadly, a penalty deep into injury time was to deny the home side as Cork Con slotted the points to go top of the AIL with a 22-20 win.
